Subject: [*] attoClock 1.3
attoClock[TM] 1.3
The way-tiny, minuscule, little clock program.
ATTENTION
Please take note of my new Internet address.
What it is
attoClock is a very small application (7566 bytes) for System 7 that displays
a digital clock in a small window. It has intentionally few features. It
displays the hour and minute, respecting the time format you have set in your
control panels. It doesnUt display seconds or the date or ring chimes or
display movies or pictures or animations. Just the time.
The motivation for creating attoClock was that I like having a clock on my
screen, but I donUt want to give up a lot of memory or disk space for the
function. I could use the Alarm Clock desk accessory, but it has a larger
window, and, if placed at the bottom of the screen, must be moved to access
its extra functions. Also, I distrust the extensions and control panels that
put a clock in the menu bar. Even with the best efforts of the authors,
conflicts among complex extensions occur. A small application that obeys
AppleUs programming guidelines is the least obtrusive way to provide a simple
function like this.
To keep attoClock as small as possible, it supports System 7 (including 7.0.1
and 7.1 and presumably future versions) only. It will silently quit if it is
launched under earlier systems. The name is taken from the metric-system
prefix atto-, which means one quintillionth (10-18). ThatUs very small, but
it should not be confused with an attaBoy, which is a small word of praise.
Changes in this version
1.3 Added Unplugged-VCR mode and a specific type and creator for attoClock
and its preferences file. Most of the increased size of the application is
due to the icons, not the addition of Unplugged-VCR mode. The application
uses no more memory than it ever did.
Acknowledgements
* Tim Dierks <absurd@apple.com> helped with information about the memory
manager.
* Russell E. Owen <owen@astro.washington.edu> suggested formatting the time
right-justified.
* Sarah Pradt <sp29@cornell.edu > suggested bringing the Finder to the front.
* Bob Lougheed <lougheed@qmserv.erim.org> helped with testing.
* Someone wrote me suggesting adding a specific icon to attoClock, but
somehow that personUs message vanished from my files. If that person will
write again, I will amend this acknowledgement.
* My friend Tony Cuevas suggested Unplugged-VCR mode.

Subject: [*] e-disk 1.2 Demo
Dears Mac Informers,
Here is a working version of the e-disk 1.2 demo.I have included a brief
read-me
file which explains how to get it to work
(Just click OK three times on the start-up screen instead of entering a serial
number. After three failed attempts at entering the serial number, it will
work
as the demo version)
This demo will expand your drive 1.5 times instead of the 2,3, or 4 times
available in the fully registered version. By using it's built in registration
option (register by phone) you can get an authorization number too use it
immediately. You will still need to pay for the full version, but you don't
have
to wait for them to ship it to you.
Try it out on a drive, you will need to back-up and restore all of your data,
but you can easily remove e-disk from your drive if you decide it is not what
you need.
Questions can be e-mailed to sartain@staff.tc.umn.edu
Enjoy,
Kevin

Andrew Welch updated his Maelstrom game to v1.31. I've attached the
updater and his description below. A full version of v1.31 will be
available, too.
- ------
This update is ONLY for those who have Maelstrom 1.30. If you have an
earlier version of Maelstrom, download the complete Maelstrom 1.3.1
package. This update is strongly recommended to those who do have
Maelstrom 1.30, because it is a short download and fixes a few problems
with Maelstrom 1.3, to wit:
-- Fixed a bug that would cause Maelstrom to display colors
incorrectly if you had a multiple monitor system, and were playing
Maelstrom on a monitor that is not the main monitor.
-- Maelstrom now works on PowerBook 180c's, 165c's, the Radius Pivot
monitor, and other configurations with non-standard video.
-- Fixed a bug that caused Maelstrom to crash or freeze the machine
upon quitting in rare cases on certain machines.
-- Fixed a bug with the TurboFunk mode

description and release notes follow.

Ambrosia Software, Inc. is running a Maelstrom high score contest! When
you get a high score in Maelstrom 1.3, you'll be given a 10 letter high
score code that'll allow you to enter your score in the contest! The
contest runs from September 1st, 1993 to December 31st, 1993 so get your
score codes in quick! You must be using Maelstrom 1.3 to get the high
score code, and should send in just the code (not your score).
The top 50 scores will receive a cool Maelstrom/Ambrosia T-shirt; cash
prizes go out to the top 3 scores as follows: 1st place: $300. 2nd place:
$100. 3rd place: $50. Send in as many score codes as you like; we'll use
only the best score you submit. You must be a registered user to enter the
contest, so please include your name/address along with your score code so
we can check our database to make sure you are registered.
The contest is free to enter; details are included in the Maelstrom 1.3
package.
Maelstrom received four mice from MacWorld. Maelstrom won the Shareware
Industry Award for best new Mac program. Maelstrom also won the MacUser
1993 Shareware/Entertainment Software award. Try it, you'll like it!
Combining the best graphics seen on any home platform and addictive game
play, Maelstrom is destined to quickly become one of the best action games
written for the Macintosh.
For a $15.00 shareware fee the you will be transported into the Maelstrom.
Here you will face danger at every turn. Deadly meteors will fly at you
>From all sides, indestructible balls will try and drain your shields and
just when you thought escape was in reach the deadly Shenobi fighter will
take you on, one-on-one. All you have to protect you are your shields, wits
and, hopefully, razor sharp reflexes.
The graphics are rendered in stunning 256 colors. This game will become the
one by which all other Macintosh arcade games, shareware or commercial,
will be judged against.
Maelstrom *requires* a color-capable Macintosh with a 256 color monitor
(any size). Maelstrom is not crippled in any way.
v1.3.1 changes:
-- Fixed a bug that would cause Maelstrom to display colors
incorrectly if you had a multiple monitor system, and were playing
Maelstrom on a monitor that is not the main monitor.
-- Maelstrom now works on PowerBook 180c's, 165c's, the Radius Pivot
monitor, and other configurations with non-standard video.
-- Fixed a bug that caused Maelstrom to crash or freeze the machine
upon quitting in rare cases on certain machines.
-- Fixed a bug with the TurboFunk mode

some of the more obvious bugs from the last version. Please replace my
previous upload, version 1.0a2, with this new release. May I suggest that
you call it something like "hyper-notebook-v1b1" or "hypernotebook-v1.0b1"
in the archive. I don't think it is necessary to mention the Reference
Stack separately, even though it could be used as a stand-alone
application.

This is the second public release of HyperNotebook and Reference Stack.
They are hypermedia versions of a spiral notebook and a box of
bibliographic notecards, respectively. They work together, or separately,
and provide not only standard text manipulation and selectable key-field
card sorting, but also button-driven PICT and QuickTime viewing, embedded
pop-up notes, and much more.
This is public domain software. It uses several of Frederic Rinaldi's
wonderful XCMD's and XFCN's. (Thank you Mr. Rinaldi.) Per Mr. Rinaldi's
licensing requirements, this software is not licensed for commercial

this is Unix brain damage; it is done to distinguish '<newline>From '
(which starts a new message) from any other from's that may be

Subject: Additional HD Installation
Hi there. I've got a question for you hardware installers out there.
A local Mac user has decided to sell his Quantum 80MB drive that came
with his Mac, which he bought less than a year ago. I'd like to buy it,
but I can only do it if I can install the drive in my widebody IIfx,
_with_ the existing Quantum 80MB internal drive.
I'd like to somebody to tell me if I'm on the right track w/regard to
what I need to install the drive:
- I need a mounting bracket to mount the drive in the second floppy
bay, which is currently empty.
- I need a SCSI cable splitter so that I can attach the new drive to
the SCSI chain.
- I need a power cable splitter so that I can provide power for the
new drive
- I need to yank the terminating resistors out of the new drive.
- I need to change the SCSI ID of the new drive, probably by setting
some jumpers somewhere.
Am I wrong on any of these points? Is there any other hardware or
information that I need to make this work? I'd really appreciate it
someone could point me in the right direction, so I don't waste money
on it.
And, if you happen to know where some of this stuff may be obtained
(like a mail-order company), I'd very much appreciate any contact info
you can give me.
Thank you very much. If there's any interest, I'll be happy to post a
summary to the net.

As for floppies, DON'T let them be x-rayed. Either get one of those lead

been able to read repeated exposure to x-rays will degrade the floppies.
Someone from one of the Mac rags did a test to confirm this.

I just bought the MacWarehouse CD-ROM. It has a double-speed NEC drive
mechanism with 300 kbps transfer rate, which seems to put it firmly in the
middle of the pack of current double-speed drives at a very competitive
price.
I've had it for about a week now and it seems to work fine -- but I have no
other, more expensive drive to compare it to. No CDs are bundled with it but
it does include the CD-ROM tool kit diskette. I finally decided to buy it
after reading that, like other electronic products, we can expect CD-ROM
prices
to continue to drop and capabilities to continue to improve and that next
year's models will blow this year's out of the water -- so if you want a drive
now, buy cheap (but smart!).
BTW, I also bought the $40 Koss speakers. Note that even though they do run
off wall power -- this requires an ac converter that is NOT included and NOT
mentioned in the ad. Otherwise, they need two C cells each.

I don't think you can get a legal Chinese version of System 7 on a FTP
server.
Chinese version is quite a little bit different from other System 7 because
the large amout of characters set, say at least more than 15 thousands
Chinese characters are needed in a typical Chinese OS, rather than 26
basic characters for English.
My suggestion:
Contact to the Apple dealer in Taiwan and pay for it, if you really need
it.
Beware that a Chinese System 7 may take up HD space from about 20MB
to more than 100 MB, depend on WHAT and HOW MANY types of Chinese
font you are going to install.

Recently it was mentioned in Info-Mac that Aldus Free Hand might me able
to edit EPS files rather than just import and print them. As much as
this may worry some distributors of prorietary files, we would welcome
this feature, we would buy Free Hand immediately if this were true.
Unfortunately, I have not been able to get a confirmation from Aldus
Germany (calling them is a very unpleasant experience! After cruising
their voice mail system and being put on hold forever each time I
called, I was never able to reach anyone competent enough to confirm or
deny).
Does anybody on the net have definitive information whether Free Hand
can _edit_ EPF files? In which version was this feature introduced?
Thank you very much

As far as I know, there's one GCC for Mac that runs under MacOS, under

Use any program to search for a return and replace with a return and
a specific character that you agree on, such as M. That will prefix
all lines with an M, which is presumably an OK character. Then, on
your end, simply search for return-M and replace with return.
Of course, this would all be easiest in Nisus, where you can specify
the positions of characters (such as line start or paragraph start)
and where you can write a macro to do it automatically,
but you all expected me to say that anyway. It will work fine in any
program that can find a return.
After he adds the initial character to _every_ line, it's not a valid
BinHex file again until you strip them off. But it should work fine...
cheers ... -Adam

Subject: Help needed - Hard drive problem?
I need help. I have been hit with a string of problems that I can't
diagnose. I'm hoping that if I list some of the symptoms and things I
have already tried, someone will be able to point me in the right
direction for a fix.
Environment: Accelerated SE (Mobius '030), System 7.0.1*, using
Connectix Compact Virtual.
Problems: the first problem I noticed was that the Vantage DA would
no longer open (Error -31 or -32 if I recall correctly).
Then my system froze every time I tried to take a new copy of the DA
from it's suitcase.
Then the system froze in the middle of rebuilding the desktop.
Norton Disk Doctor found was a few bad bundle bits
(including Vantage) and something about files sharing the same space
(I think that was it, but I should have written it down).
I was still unable to rebuild the desktop and I was starting to lose
document icons, so I removed my system and installed System 7.0.
Disinfectant and GateKeeper found no problems on the virus front.
After installing the new system a number of my cp's no longer would
open. (This could have been true before the new system was installed,
but they were working a few hours before at least). I copied in fresh
ones and they work fine now.
Somewhere along the line AOL got damaged so that some of the OK
buttons were missing and it crashed repeatedly.
Now my system freezes almost regularly when I open new applications.
I have to believe these problems are related somehow. Perhaps they are
all a result of the disk problem initially, but since then I have
reinstalled the system and rebuilt the desktop. Any insight anyone
could offer would be appreciated. Specifically, what caused it, and
what should I do to make the best of the current situation.

Subject: NSI 1.4 and GeoPort
Installing almost anything into my system file (on a Q840) results in a
crash.
I first thought that it was an Fkey that I have (tsv 4.0.2) and that was
incompatible with the GeoPort software. So I got rid of that, and all was
fine.
The Apple event manager (or whatever) part of Applescript (included with the
av
machines) also seems to be a bit strange, because things were better after
its removal. Now, NSI 1.4 crashes the system in the same fashion that tsv
did.
The crash itself isn't an extension conflict, because it crashes before any
ex-
tensions load up (save the apple event manager, if present), and I use Now's
Startup Manager, so their icons would show up. Every time, Macsbug drops me in
at the same address, which is like 'DataPubsManager' in the ROM. (I doubted
that the existence of an fkey (one that I love, too) could possibly crash a
system, but I seemed to have thought wrong..)
And yes, I can just exit to shell and the system loads up without any more
extensions after I get kicked into macsbug.
Any other 840/GeoPort/NSI 1.4 users out there that have done this
successfully?
And I've reinstalled the sys a few times, if you're wondering.

A couple of years ago I asked about Mac schematics and some kind

There is a company in Wyoming that makes a business of figuring out
scematics for all kinds of things and publishing them. Among
their other items, they have drawn scematics for several Macs.
Bomarc Services
Box 1113
Casper, Wyoming 82602

I ordered two schematics, a Mac II and a IIcx. I found them well
drawn and mostly accurate. I didn't see one undocumented VIA pin
on the Mac II schematic so they can miss some things.
Two warnings:
1. They print their schematics on coloured paper with a large
gray watermark in the center to prevent photocopying and
sharing of the prints. Their brochure explains in colourful
language why they feel they must do this!
2. They seem to have trouble with any other payment than a U.S.
drawn cheque. I first sent them a Postal Money Order made
out in US funds and they sent it back with complaints about
trying to cash it. I finally gave up and had a relative in
the states mail my order in with a cheque from his US bank!

I also had the same miserable problem and tried iconwrap. It didn't
do a whole lot of good. Apparantly, each icon's author write the code
to display the icon and many don't follow Apple's standards.
The "Startup Manager" that is part of the "Now Utilities" bundle
does a super job at this. It also gives control over the order of
extension execution without forcing you to play games (..insert spaces
or control chars at the beginning of extension names..)
It costs $$$. I got it bundled with SAM for $80? from Tiger S/W.

Configuration: System 7.1, a few Extensions and Cdevs. But this still
happens even I disable all the extensions (Shift-Boot).
I did try PowerLock last week on this machine (IIci). Then I decide that
it's not for me - If this has anything to do with PowerLock at all.
Any help is appreciated.
PS. Another problem: there seems to be a conflict between one of the
extensions and the AppleMenuItems folder. When I turn off all extensions,
all Apple Menu Items worked just fine. But when I leave the extensions
on, THE FOURTH ITEM under the Apple Menu would not work. More specifically,
the item that takes the 4th slot will not be activated; instead, if a file
is selected on the Finder, attempt to activate the 4th item under Apple
would call up the Get Info window of the selectd file.
Could anybody give a hint on which extension may be doing the trick?
Thanks a million!
Jack

Sys 7.1 (LCIII freeze) (A)
Many crashes and performance problems that have been popping up
on the
most recent Macs are caused not by the new hardware, but by that
bad
thing called "System 7.1"--yuck! Anyway, Apple has released the
"Hardware System Update 2.0", currently located at ftp.apple.com
in
the /dts/mac/sys.soft/7.1.hardware.update folder. Run this baby
on
your System 7.1 Macintosh for some important fixes. This fix is
for
7.1 users only
Our LCIII was crashing, oh...about every two minutes before the
update
"increased system reliability". This is a _must_ do for 7.1
users.

Subject: tn3270 2.3d26 "Print Screen..." won't
I mailed this to cmsmaint@brownvm.brown.edu on 7/1 and 9/1 but haven't
received a response. Would anyone here have the answer?
A faculty member here has a Mac IIsi, System 7.0.1, and a LaserWriter
Select 310 printer, and uses tn3270 to access our IBM mainframe for
Profs mail. When he selects "Print Screen...", the printout contains
no ASCII text, but only graphics characters. We've tried reinstalling
the application with the same results. Other applications can print
normally so the driver must be okay. Will a Print Screen work on a LW
Select (i.e., QuickDraw) printer?

Subject: Translating the Symbol font from Macs to PC's (Q)
We have been doing quite a bit of translation between Macs=
and PCs
recently, assembling the abstracts of an international congress.=
For
reasons which I won't go into, a decision was made to assemble the=
whole
thing on a PC running WordPerfect. By and large, translations from
MacWrite or Word using MacLink went well, but we indentified the=
following
problem:
Texts containing letters typed using the Symbol character=
set
didn't translate properly. This is annoying for certain greek letters,
such as alpha or gamma, which don't exist in the common Mac fonts=
such as
Helvetica or Times (although others, such as beta, do).
This is not just a shortcoming of MacLink. We were able to=
find a
co-operative colleague who uses WordPerfect 2.0 on a Mac, so we typed=
a
short text and asked WP 2.0 to write a PC file (for version 5.1).=
It
mangled the greek letters when we checked it on the PC, and when=
we tried
to read the converted file back into WP 2.0 on the Mac, we got garbage
where we were expecting greek letters, so it very much looks as if=
the
translation step was faulty.
I admit that I haven't been able to try the same experiment=
using
Word on the Mac and Word on a PC. Anyone curious enough to try?=
And does
anyone have a fix or a suggestion?

Here is the latest version of Steve Dorner's e-mail program for the
Mac. Here's what he says about it in one of the attached files:
GENERAL STUFF
Eudora is an Internet-compatible mailer for Macintoshes. It can be used with
MacTCP, the Communications Toolbox, or any of the UUCP implementations for
the Mac. Eudora is free.
TRANSLITERATION IN EUDORA
Eudora has a primitive transliteration facility. It can replace any one 8
bit character with any other 8-bit character, when sending mail, receiving
mail, or displaying a message. This is primarily of interest to people who
communicate in languages other than English; if you don't, read no further.
Here's the bottom line. Put the EudoraTables document in your Preferences
folder (system folder, for you 6'ers). Start Eudora. Open a message from
your in box. Hold down the shift key, and press on the blank popup in the
icon bar. Choose the appropriate country code from the menu. Now, choose
New... from the Message menu. Again, hold down the shift key and choose the
appropriate country code from the menu. All done.
EUDORA-INFO
Please send mail to eudora-info@qualcomm.com to get the latest information
about Eudora, including lists of files currently available on the ftp site.
Someday, you may even be able to get Eudora files this way; but not yet.
FUTURE PLANS
Eudora version 2.0 will have support for MIME (the new internet standard
that allows for pictures, sound, rich text, national character sets and file
transfer in mail, all in a standard way), AppleEvents (so that Eudora can be
used by other programs who want to send mail), and possibly a remote mailbox
protocol like IMAP or PCMail. Eudora 2.0 will be able to use pattern
matching and a rules database for automated sorting, filing, and handling of
mail. I'll also be keeping an eye on OCE developments.
.....BUT version 1.4 already supports MIME!
International users who want the full story (there are French and
Swedish versions of Eudora) should ftp to ftp.cso.uiuc.edu and look around
the Eudora directory where you wil find a sub-directory called 'intl'
(no apostrophes).
